The gas side of a water heater is a propane burner with a vented exhaust path, and that puts most of this diagnosis with a technician rather than with you. What you can establish — and what genuinely speeds up the visit — is whether propane is reaching the appliance at all, and exactly where in the ignition sequence it gives up.

There is a difference between no hot water at all and hot water that runs out quickly, and it is worth being precise. No hot water at all, particularly on the first trip of the season, is very often a bypass valve still set for winterising — the tank is simply empty. Hot water that runs out fast is usually sediment occupying the volume that should hold it.
