Not cooling, freezing up, tripping breakers, and refusing to run on a generator.
- RV air conditioner running but not cooling
The unit is powered and the fan works, so the failure is downstream of the controls. It is either not moving enough air across the coil, or the refrigeration circuit is not removing heat. Those two have completely different costs, and one measurement tells you which you have.
Safe to drive - RV air conditioner freezing up
Ice on an evaporator coil is nearly always an airflow problem, not a sign the unit is working too well. Too little air across the coil lets its surface fall below freezing, condensation turns to ice, the ice blocks more airflow, and the process accelerates. Running it harder makes it worse.
Safe to drive - RV air conditioner trips the breaker
A breaker trips because current exceeded what it allows, and the timing tells you why. Tripping at the instant the compressor tries to start is usually a starting problem — a weak capacitor, low supply voltage, or a pedestal that cannot deliver the surge. Tripping after it has been running is a different and generally more serious fault.
Safe to drive - RV air conditioner will not run on the generator
If it works on shore power and not on the generator, the air conditioner is almost certainly fine. The compressor draws a large surge for a fraction of a second at start, and that surge — not the running load — is what a smaller generator cannot supply. Generators also lose output at altitude, which turns a marginal setup into a failing one.
