RV generator problems
Will not start, starts then dies, or runs with no power reaching the coach. Three different faults.
- RV generator will not start
Two facts explain most of these. Built-in generators draw through a pickup set higher in the tank than the engine’s, so the generator is starved while the vehicle still has usable fuel — by design, so you cannot strand yourself. And fuel left standing for months leaves deposits that block the small passages in a carburettor, which is what disuse rather than wear does to a generator.

The engine can start, so ignition and compression are working. What follows depends entirely on how long it runs. A few seconds points at fuel delivery — it started on what was in the bowl and then found nothing behind it. Minutes of running before shutdown points instead at a protective cut-out responding to a real condition: overheating, low oil, or an overload.

A generator is two machines bolted together: an engine and an alternator. If the engine runs correctly and no power reaches the coach, the engine half is proven good and the fault is on the output side — the generator’s own breaker, the alternator end, or the automatic transfer switch that selects between shore power and generator.
